The Parent-Student Handbook you are reading now is a living, breathing document that attempts to cover situations that parents, students, and tutors encounter on a daily basis.  At its core, it is a set of rules, regulations, and requirements that support the learning environment, while serving as a guide for each of us as we make decisions regarding a variety of school matters.


Crossroads Christian School is a career and college-preparatory Christian school. We value a learning environment that considers individual student needs while encouraging growth academically, spiritually, emotionally and socially.  CCS is a private part-time Christian School that provides a one-on-one and small group learning environment that supports a students’ home-centered education.  On-campus classes meet two to four days per week, with at-home learning occurring on the alternate days.

With instruction and guidance from experienced, degreed and certified teachers, it offers the unique opportunity for the one-on-one instruction that is so productive in a homeschool environment, while encouraging socialization and interaction with instructors and peers.  Combined Schooling Options include: Part Time Enrollment, Full Time Enrollment, Extended Enrollment and Dual Credit Enrollment. In addition to enrollment options, students enrolled may choose the college bound or career (non-college bound) track and have access to participate in select extra-curricular activities, mission trips, etc.  

Because homeschools in Texas are private schools and are not regulated by the state, CCS Homeschool students have unlimited opportunities for coursework and electives. In order to ensure that CCS Homeschool students have comparable accountability and privileges as the students in the traditional setting, Crossroads Christian School has set the necessary standards to keep the program accountable.

Inspiring leadership as well as learning, CCS is a quality alternative to the educational concerns we face today.  Our roles as mentors and educators offer a level of individualized care that no other school can provide as we foster individual achievement through flexible, personalized learning.  We provide a structured, interactive, self-paced education where each student has a curriculum based on his or her individual educational needs and academic goals.  From Modified to Advanced Placement courses, every student will have the opportunity to succeed.

CCS is a non-denominational private homeschool that will transform the lives of students both academically and spiritually. Our program is not a child-care facility, day-care center, or licensed before-school or after-school program nor do we offer child-care services. We conduct background checks for all program employees and volunteers who work in our program.

Crossroads Christian School Agreement
I have read and agree with the beliefs and mission statement of Crossroads Christian School. I understand that the curriculum provided is a homeschool educational program. I understand that my child will attend tutoring a minimum of two days per week and that ultimately, the burden of my child’s education lies with me. I agree to partner with CCS and its affiliations to help facilitate and implement home-based educational support necessary for effective learning. CCS and any affiliations operate and are educating under the delegated authority of the parents.

Academic Advising & Guidance

Crossroads Christian School partners with parents for each student’s academic success.  This partnership is an established, ongoing, intentional relationship between Crossroads Christian homeschool educators and parents.

The goals of the Academic Partnership are:

  • To enable students to build on their academic strengths by promoting a responsive, challenging and supportive educational environment characterized by high standards, commitment to quality and student success.
  • To advance student academic and social development into engaged, independent learners and competent decision makers.
  • To ensure the student is taking the proper coursework needed to graduate within four years while equipping them to make a wise and informed choice of college or university and to facilitate career skills for the non-college-bound students.
  • To prepare the college bound student for college entry exams.
  • To direct and instruct qualified students to be judicious with their application for higher education admissions, including financial aid / scholarships.

We cannot make decisions on incomplete applications.

A completed application and non-refundable application fee is required before any student is considered for admission.  Students who have been expelled from another school will not be considered for admission to CCS until one year following the expulsion. The student must complete the year and be in good standing at another school before CCS will give consideration for admission.

Crossroads does not discriminate or retaliate on the basis of gender, race, color, national or ethnic origin, or physical or cognitive disability in administration of its educational policies, admission policies, and other school administered programs. However, Crossroads Christian School Incorporated does reserve the right to use appropriate selection criteria for employees and students to fulfill its stated goals and objectives.

Admissions Policies and Procedures

An enrollment package is available online. Registration Forms will not be processed without payment of the Registration Fee. The administration may waive certain forms for students transferring from like-minded Christian schools.

Private primary schools are required to request records when enrolling a child under 11 years of age to verify the child’s name, birth date, and previous school records. If documentation is not provided, the school shall notify the appropriate law enforcement agency to determine if the child has been reported missing. Law enforcement agencies shall immediately notify each school, including private primary schools, when a report of a missing child is received. (Tex. Code of Criminal Procedure Ann. Chapter 63)

Crossroads Christian School’s biblical role is to work in conjunction with the family to mold students to be Christ like. On occasion, the atmosphere or conduct within a particular home may be counter or in opposition to the biblical lifestyle the school teaches.

As a private institution, Crossroads Christian reserves the privilege of setting and maintaining its own standards for student conduct, dress, and scholarship. It is understood that to be a student at Crossroads is a privilege and not a right. Any student who does not conform to the standards and regulations of the institution may forfeit this privilege. The school maintains the right to admit only those students who are in harmony with the standards of the school. The school may expel any student at any time, who, in the opinion of the school, does not share the spirit of the institution--regardless of whether or not the student conforms to the specific rules and regulations of the school.

GENERAL  ADMISSIONS POLICY

  • Priority will be given according to the date and time applications are received.
  • Priority will be given to returning students during the specified re-enrollment period of each year. Enrollment is opened to all other applicants during the rest of the year.
  • Applicants may not be under behavioral probation, suspension, expulsion, or any other behavioral conditions from their previous school.
  • Applicants must live with their parents or legal guardians.
  • Crossroads Christian Schools will not, normally, accept new students in the 4th quarter of the school year.
  • Crossroads Christian Schools will usually accept new 12th grade students in the fall semester only.

Exclusion of Students with Documented Discipline Histories

Subject to and in accordance with Texas law, CCS will not generally accept students with documented criminal histories, juvenile court adjudications, or other serious discipline problems under Subchapter A, Chapter 37 of the Education Code. We also will not enroll A parent may appeal this determination if there are extenuating circumstances concerning student discipline history in accordance with the general grievance policy.  A student who has been expelled from another school district or charter or private school will not be eligible for admission.

OFFICE HOURS
Office hours are 8:00-12:00 and 12:30-3:00 Monday through Thursday.
 
TUTORING SCHEDULE
CCS provides families with flexibility and credibility through curriculum choices, academic support, tutoring, field trips, community and development, on-campus tutoring, electives, assessments, and extra-curricular activities.
 
On-campus classes meet two days per week, with at-home learning occurring on the alternate days.  We suggest that your student spend his or her time working the core subjects and required electives when on campus. Your student should spend a minimum number of hours outside the classroom working on progress and any additional electives.

Campus security is taken seriously. We offer a window of 8:15-8:30 AM drop-off and 2:30-2:45 PM pick-up located at 105 W. Stayton Ave. Once school commences, entrance to campus is limited to the office entrance at 512 Bridge Street. Upon arrival, all visitors are required to check in with the receptionist. Security cameras are also located throughout campus.

Homebound Students (Grades 3rd - 12th) will schedule a time to attend campus classes throughout the year.
     Students are considered “homebound” if:
1. location or work impedes the student from reaching campus during the school year,
2. they did not register in time and are on the “wait list” until a campus spot opens, or
3. the family wishes to homeschool in the privacy of their own home, but still want the benefits of socializing with peers and the academic advising, guidance and record keeping that CCSI offers.
4. * Grades 3-5 classes are not offered on-campus and are homebound only. Elementary students enrolled in the homebound program will considered first for availability for on-campus classes when they reach 6th grade.
ALL Homebound students are encouraged to attend field trips and on-campus meetings, photo sessions, etc.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES: CCS provides 99% of all supplies needed throughout the year for each and every student. We ask that students bring two things: their Bibles and either a headset or ear buds. Although we have extra Bibles on campus we are reminding you that this is required. Students are required to bring their Bibles to campus each time they arrive. We will meet and use the Bibles in the sanctuary every morning and further need to open them for research throughout the day. Students that do not have a Bible can purchase one through the school.
 

Fees: Space is limited; this fee secures your child a spot at CCS and includes the curriculum, technology fee, Renweb, FACTS, all required school supplies and supplemental curriculum.

$500 Registration Fee (non-refundable & due at time of registration $525 after June 1st)

Any unpaid balance will result in termination of enrollment, and/or delay completion of course requirements. School policy prohibits the release of official school documents (i.e. transcripts and report cards) until all accounts are resolved. For payment plan enrollment: all registration fees, first months’ tuition and a finalized FACTS payment plan is required before your student is considered enrolled at CCS. Any violation of this agreement and the Verification of Enrollment Form for the student will be reported and submitted to the State of Texas as not currently enrolled.

Crossroads Financial Policy

Policy

  1. In order to impartially and objectively manage student and organizational accounts, Crossroads Christian School (“CCS ”) has a Financial Policy.
  2. The tuition payment and student account policy is to be applied to all active and inactive accounts receivable.
  3. The payment and receipt options policy is to be applied to all active and inactive account receivable, as well as any fundraising event cash receipts, donation receipts, or any miscellaneous receipts.
  4. The fundraising event cash accounting policy is to be applied to all fundraising events sponsored by CCS , or any organization on behalf of CCS , where the primary fundraising is cash at the time of the event (e.g. Pancake brunch, Garage or Rummage Sale, Gala, Free will offerings, etc). The events noted are examples, and do not constitute a finite list.
  5. CCS reserves the right to refuse academic continuation at the first month's tuition delinquency or if no prior arrangement has been made. Report cards and other official documents are withheld until the account has been paid in full.

FamilyRequirements

Prospective CCS Homeschool families must meet all Crossroads Christian School admissions requirements as well as additional requirements for acceptance into the CCS homebound program.  CCS is dedicated to providing students with the opportunity for academic excellence, and guided growth in mental, spiritual and social development. Crossroads is not part of any church, but a non-denominational homeschool transforming the lives of students and cultivating constructive relationships with the Victoria community. We believe quality Christian education is achieved when parents, students, and tutors firmly support the school in every aspect and maintain open communication with one another. The following specifics are essential:

♦ Parents are responsible for their child’s education and spiritual growth.

♦ Tutors must realize a calling for teaching and be spiritually and academically qualified.

♦ Students must have a desire to strive for excellence in studies and activities, to be respectful of others and to serve the school, church and the community.

For the homebound student, one parent must serve as the primary teaching parent and the other as the supportive parent. Parents must meet the following criteria:

The primary teaching parent must:

  • Testify to be a practicing born-againbeliever.
  • View home school education as a commitment and acalling.
  • Not have employment that inhibits the education of the child during school hours regardless of the age of the studentenrolled.
  • Have received a High School diploma, or theequivalent.
  • Have the ability to plan for and teach at his/her child’s educational level and acceptthe responsibility to doso.
  • Accept responsibility for attending all scheduledmeetings.

The supportive parent must:

  • View home school education as a commitment and acalling.
  • Express support for the primary teaching parent’s commitment to homeeducation.

The supportive parent may serve as a teaching parent for particular courses only if he/she:

  • Testifies to be a practicing born-againbeliever.
  • Has the ability to plan for and teach at his/her child’s educational level and acceptsthe responsibility to do so.

ATTENDANCE

Attendance is defined as participation in all activities assigned to a student during the time the school is open for instruction (this includes homebound students. Homebound students must maintain progress. There is a minimum attendance requirement for grading purposes. A student may have up to 10 days of non- school related absences per semester to receive full credit in that program and their classes. On the 11th absence, the student will not receive credit for that program and the classes in which the student is enrolled. School employees investigate and report violations to the State of Texas.

Furthermore, in order to maintain the integrity of the school and to remain in compliance, any student who is absent for 10 days or more or homebound and shows no progress in the on-line program will be placed "on hold" and considered pending for withdrawal. Disenrollment proceedings begin promptly on day 11 with the State of Texas Verification of Enrollment Form for the student filed as not currently enrolled.

Please notify school personnel prior to 9:00 a.m. on the first day of an absence. The student is responsible to have his/her parent call the school office and report the reason for this absence. A signed parent or physician note should then be sent with the student to be filed in the office. The student must report to the office before returning to class. Students who do not bring a parent/physician note to the office explaining their absence to school the previous day will receive an unexcused absence. Students will not be allowed to make up missed work until parent/physician note has been received. The note content should include student’s name, grade, date(s) of absence, reason for absence and parent signature.

When a student is required to leave school for an appointment, the student will be called to the office when the parent has arrived.

Students who experience a long-term illness/hospitalization (five or more consecutive school days), or who have a physical impairment and/or a medically substantiated problem which entails repeated absences, can be granted an attendance allowance based on a review of the individual case by the Director and CCS Administration. It will be the responsibility of the student/parent to secure from the teacher assignments or tests missed during such an absence from school.

In order to support your student academically, notification of extended absences must be received at least 10 days in advance, so that assignments can be compiled. Approval of extended absences is at administrative discretion.

All absences count against the minimum attendance requirement.  All students with absences (excused or unexcused) will have the same number of days, including weekends, in which he/she was absent to make up work. Failure to make up work assigned will result in a grade of zero. Any “incomplete” on a report card not finalized within two weeks becomes an "F" unless there are extenuating circumstances that must be reported to the director.

However, if a student misses part of the day, either excused or unexcused, and arrives to school that same day, they must make arrangements to make up any tests given that day and turn in any assignment that was due that day to the class periods that were missed or are going to miss. For example, if a student arrives during third period and had a test scheduled for first period and an assignment due for second period, it is the student’s responsibility to make up the test and turn in the assignment that same day. Failure to do so will result in a zero for the assignment, test or quiz.

A student who knows in advance that he/she will need to leave the school campus during school hours should have a written request from his/her parents. This request should be presented to the Office before school begins. Under no circumstances will students leave the school campus on their own recognizance. All students leaving campus during the school day must have administrative approval. Failure to follow the policy will result in disciplinary action.

To be eligible to participate in a scheduled extra-curricular activity, a student must have one-half day’s attendance in school. Students who miss a school due to illness must have an administrator’s permission to participate in an activity or practice on the weekends. Exceptions to any of these rules must be approved by Administration.

All final decisions are at the discretion of the Director and CCS Administration.


Closed Campus Policy

CCS operates a closed campus. Students are to remain on campus until the final dismissal. Students may leave only with written permission from their parents and approval from the administration.


School Hours and After Hours fees:
Our program is open Monday-Thursday from 8:30am until 2:30pm with no school on Fridays, except by appointment only.

Out of respect for our staff members, the doors open at 8:15am and close promptly at 2:45pm. Some of our staff have second jobs for which they need to leave, campus requirements, family responsibilities or other tasks. We appreciate your understanding and supporting our staff by kindly arriving on time.
 

We recognize that special situations occur and we will excuse a first time late pick-up, any additional late pick-ups will result in a fee. Any after-hours pick-up will result in $10 first 5 minutes, then $1/minute fee payable upon pickup to the School Director. No exceptions.

 

CONFERENCE HOURS
Conference hours are by appointment only between 2:30-3:00, Monday - Thursday. Please call the office to schedule a time convenient for both parties.
 

CONTACTING CHILD OR TEACHER DURING SCHOOL

There may be times when you need to communicate with your child at school during the school day. If an emergency arises, we will make sure we get a message to your child; however, classes cannot be interrupted for routine messages. Classroom teaching time is a valuable and limited resource. Classroom interruptions take away from the educational experience of all students. Teachers use all of their day, including recesses, teaching, assisting students, planning, and assessing student work. 

Please help limit classroom interruptions to emergencies only. For non-emergency issues please email your child’s teacher or call (not text) the school office at 361-212-3078. If at any time you have concerns, please schedule a conference with his or her teacher.  Thank you again for your support to help maintain the integrity of the classroom learning environment.

CONTACTING TEACHERS OUT OF SCHOOL HOURS

Parents are kindly asked to respect the private times of teachers and to refrain from contacting teachers (via calls or text messages) before 8am and after 3:00, unless a specific arrangement has been made with the teacher to communicate after hours at a given time.

Please note that parents may email teachers at any time or call the office to schedule a conference. Staff email addresses can be found on the Crossroads website via this link.  Furthermore, if a teacher has given you, as a parent, his/her private cell number – please do not distribute this number.


CROSSROADS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL COMMUNITY SERVICE PROGRAM

Crossroads Christian School secondary students (grades 6-12) are required to complete community service hours each year. This requirement is meant to teach our students the importance of being a contributing member of their community through service, preferably to the less fortunate of society. This program includes building the habit of service and developing a sense of community through direct action. The elements of our service program tie in closely to the school’s mission and values.
  • Students in grades 6, 7 and 8 must complete 12 hours of community service per year while
  • Students in grades 9 - 12 must complete 18 hours per year.
  • AP Students are required to complete 24 hours of community service and
 

Staff: The tutors of Crossroads Christian are all qualified professionals. Their training and credentials meet the stringent requirements for instruction. They serve not only as educators, but also as mentors and role models. They are the “living curriculum” in our school and this makes all the difference.
 

The Classroom: In order to provide a quality learning environment CCSI has 2 to 3 experienced, degreed, certified teachers and aides in the classroom. This means all students and tutors are enjoying the benefits of the one-room schoolhouse community. We believe in socialization, peer mentorship, one-on-one and small group instruction.

 

Student/Tutor Ratio:

CCSI’s multiple educators are obtainable to the educational needs of any student at any time; thus allowing the one-on-one attention so needed in our current education system. At the same time, the students benefit from peer mentorship and socialization.  In order to maintain a small student/tutor ratio, classes are capped and enrollment is limited.

NOTE: CCSI closes registration when enrollment reaches capacity.

 

What We Do: We are degreed, certified teachers providing a challenging and enriched career and college preparatory experience through a Christian worldview.  In addition, CCSI provides academic advising and guidance, community service hours, enrichment activities, field trips, i.d. cards, progress reports, report cards, socialization, high school diplomas, graduation and transcripts.

Lunch

Lunches are scheduled daily in the Hiller Activity Center. Students may sit where they choose, up to six students per table.  All students are welcome to bring a sack lunch from home.   Off-campus lunch is not permitted. Lunch deliveries are permitted; however, students leaving class to order lunch is not permitted. We ask that students order lunch prior to the school day or have parents order. Deliveries need to be dropped off at 512 Bridge Street. Parents are always welcome to drop off lunch or join their student.  Parents and staff are asked to encourage proper table manners, use of utensils and appropriate lunch conversation.

A microwave is available and the student is responsible for cleaning the appliance in cases of leaks and spills. Toward the end of the lunch period, faculty will instruct the children to clean their areas.  Students are expected to discard their trash in the appropriate area. Daily Cafeteria Helpers will be assigned and are responsible for wiping tables and clearing remaining trash.

All students are required to participate.


OUTSIDE FOOD & DRINK: Every morning, as students enter the building from Stayton they will move directly into the sanctuary. There is no food or drink allowed in the sanctuary. The school will NOT provide an area to place outside food and drinks to save them for later (i.e. coffee drinks, sonic drinks, etc.). If students show up with these drinks they will be asked to return them to their vehicles or throw them away immediately. They will be counted tardy if they take the time to return to their vehicles and do not enter the building before 8:30.

Policy for Packed Lunches (brought in from home). The ONLY outside food and drinks allowed to be brought in the morning are packed lunches. It is the responsibility of the parents / care givers to provide an appropriate packed lunch container where food items can be stored securely and appropriately until the lunchtime period. Drinks for students' lunches need to be in thermos type containers or in closed, un-opened bottles with screw on lids or unopened pouches. Lunches should be in bags or lunch kits and not open during school hours.

Although we have microwaves available, the school cannot provide cooled storage areas and therefore cannot take legal responsibility for foods prepared at home and then brought into school.


PE Credit

Homeschool students must meet the state requirement for Physical Education credit. It can be earned through the CCS Alternative PE Credit process by participating in a school sport or by participating in an aerobics-based program. Homeschool families are responsible for obtaining the information and meeting the criteria for receiving credit. Documentation must be submitted within two weeks after the end of a sports season or the end of the semester for an aerobic program.

PE: All grades through 8th will attend PE every day they are on campus. Students MUST BE in closed toed shoes – NO SANDALS or jandals. Students will be counted absent from PE if they are unable to participate due to the wrong clothing. Students are asked to wear their tennis shoes to school as PE is scheduled first thing in the morning. After PE is over they can change into any other approved footwear.

Texas mandates physical education instruction to be offered at each elementary grade level.  Texas mandates at least 135 minutes of moderate or vigorous structured physical activity per week in elementary school (grades K-5) [Texas Administrative Code (TAC), Chapter 116, Subchapter A].  Additionally, the state requires certification or licensure of physical education teachers.

These requirements are why we employed Ms. Ledwig as fitness coach for the students at Crossroads Christian School. Ms. Ledwig is a provider for VISD's off-campus PE program where students can receive their physical education requirement (PE credit).  In order to remain in compliance with the State of Texas, students are required to participate in PE. Only a doctor's note will release them from participation (for a specified time).

Students who do not participate or who have continually failed in bringing proper shoes for PE will have to document and fulfill their PE credit outside of regular school hours.

Progress Reports/Report Cards and Self-Paced Instruction:
 
Report Cards with each student’s grades or performance and absences in each class or subject are issued to parents every 9 weeks. Please see the calendar for reporting dates.
 
At least once during the nine week-grading period, parents will be given a written Progress Report of their child’s performance in any or all courses. Progress reports are designed to give a detailed summary of the student’s overall score including missing assignments. Progress and Report card grades reflect "0" for all past due assignments. Late assignments can be completed, but do not receive full credit.
 
In Ignitia, the course score ONLY averages what the student has completed so far.  It does not average in the zero for a past due assignment. Grades with past due work that has a zero (until completion) are reflected on both progress and report cards.
 
For example, if your student has completed two assignments and assignment one received a 90 and assignment two received a 95, Ignitia course score will show: 92.5.  However, if there are 3 past due assignments, progress/reports cards will average: 90, 95, 0, 0, 0 = 37 (reflected grade).  As with any educational program, assignments not turned in by the due date are late. If these assignments are never turned in, they receive a zero.
 
Progress reports will give students an overview to catch up and turn in any past due work. At report cards, the current units will be removed as new units open and we move forward through the curriculum. Students will no longer have access to the current units. Again, as with any other educational program, students must continue to show progress.
We do this in order to facilitate completion of the current year’s curriculum by the last day of school. In order for students to pass to the next grade level they must complete the current grade and its curriculum in its entirety. In order to do that, our self-paced instruction requires due dates. Please see below for our policy on self-paced instruction.
* some of our high school students prefer to finish one subject at a time. For example, English, history and Bible might be 100% complete for this grading period already with math and science showing a 0 (zero) for the course score so far.  We do not have a problem with this form of learning, as long as the math and science units are complete by the end of the grading period (when report cards are due).
 
Students who need “extra time” or extra help are always given that opportunity. Students that need to be “re-taught” are also given opportunities. At a basic level, re-teaching means "teaching again" content that students failed to learn. Some form of request from the parent or student or assessment always accompanies re-teaching; such assessments reveal student misconceptions or errors in understanding, which clarify which content the teacher must reteach. Furthermore, our teachers use a different approach from the one initially used as we give our students the additional time they need to master core concepts and elevate their learning to the next level.  For re-teaching to be effective, we monitor students' levels of understanding to determine whether immediate re-teaching is necessary and since grades alone are not always an indicator of a students’ understanding, each student should make us aware when they are struggling with a concept.
 

Self-Paced Instruction: Crossroads uses a blended learning model that incorporates self-paced learning inside the classrooms. Self-paced instruction is any kind of instruction that proceeds based on learner response. Self-pacing in the classroom allows students to progress at a pace that suits the learner. Learners who work at a fast pace have the opportunity to gain competency quickly. Learners who learn at a slower pace have the opportunity for repetition without being pushed ahead too quickly.  Students can then be grouped as needed to review, remediate or accelerate the learning.

Self-pacing is flexible, but requires time management for submissions and meeting deadlines. All work must be completed by the due dates. Students are expected to arrive in class prepared to take notes, with their text books and/or laptops, journals, and having done their assigned homework. Failure to come prepared will adversely affect their class time and ultimately their grade.

Attending class regularly, scheduling one-on-one academic tutoring, and preparing ahead of time are essential features of our programs. Failure to adhere to these expectations may result in anything from a warning to dis-enrollment.


BEHAVIORAL PROBATION
A student who exhibits significant disruptive behavior and continues to do so despite measures to correct his/her behavior will be placed on probation. The student will then have reasonable time, as determined by the administration, to correct the behavior. Violation of the probation will result in recommendation for expulsion.
 
ACADEMIC INTEGRITY
All students are expected be honest and display a high standard of integrity in preparation and presentation of work for credit in all classes. The attempt of any student to present as their own work not done on their own will be regarded as a serious offense and subject to a grading penalty and/or disciplinary action. School staff will contact parents or guardians who violate this policy.
 
Cheating
Dishonesty of any kind on a test or examination, written assignment, or project, illegal possession of test or examination questions, the use of unauthorized notes during a test or examination from or to another student, assisting others to cheat or altering grades are instances of cheating.
 
Plagiarism
Offering the work of another as one’s work without offering power acknowledgement of the work is plagiarism. Any student who fails to give proper credit for identical work taken from books, magazines, and encyclopedia or from websites on the Internet is guilty of plagiarism.

CURRICULUM 

At Crossroads Christian, our goal is to assist the family in the mentorship and education of the student, and to ensure they have every opportunity for success. With your help, we choose curriculum from publishers who provide superior educational courses and resources that help present that material most effectively. In order to provide the best materials for each course of mastery learning, we use, but are not limited to, the following course materials: Accelerated Reader, Alpha Omega’s Ignitia, LIFEPAC,  and A2 Curriculum from Accelerated Achievement. The following character and leadership skills courses are required, integrated into the curriculum and included in the curriculum fees: Sean Covey's The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens, The 7 Habits of  Happy Kids, and for seniors, Dave Ramsey’s Financial Foundations Curriculum.

CORE CURRICULUM Ignitia is a versatile and multifunctional online learning platform, with streamlined efficiencies and interactive features that enrich the educational experience. Ignitia courses are not only rigorous and interactive, but provide instruction based on a Christian worldview; encouraging students to consider challenging questions from a biblical perspective with text-based lessons, assignments, quizzes, and tests that engage students while they learn. Students have 24/7 access to more than 50,000 multimedia elements including audio and video files, challenging games, interactive exercises, a historical timeline, and integrated video clips reinforce concepts and offer in depth explanation of key points.

Additionally, Ignitia opens the door to career and college readiness for students with optional Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses. Available for grades 7-12, CTE courses encourage students to explore, compete, and succeed as lifelong learners beyond high school. CTE, AP Courses and Electives are not included in CCCI's fees and tuition, but can always be purchased in addition to the curriculum.

Honors Courses
Homeschool students may register for honors classes with written permission from either a classroom Tutor or previous course evaluator.
 
Advanced Placement (AP) Courses
Homeschool students who want to take an AP course must take the course on campus, through Victoria College, through another accredited agency, or the teaching parent must have taken an approved AP training class.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
 
A total of 20 core credit hours are needed to graduate from the Crossroads Christian School . In order to graduate with a CCS diploma, students must meet all of the graduation requirements set up by the Crossroads Christian School and the State of Texas.
 
The Crossroads diploma requires four years of High School academic courses. Students in Grades 9-12 take five or six full-credit homework-bearing courses per year and must complete community service hours. The normal course load for seniors is five full-credit homework-bearing courses. In special circumstances, a senior may be granted permission to take a sixth homework-bearing course. In addition, students may take optional elective courses. All courses are tailor designed to meet each students needs for post-secondary plans. Students in grades 9-12 can take dual credit classes.
 
 
The diploma is awarded to seniors with four years of high school attendance who have met the School’s academic standards (meets State of Texas requirements), completed the required community service hours and fulfilled the course requirements listed below.  To remain eligible for a Crossroad’s diploma, a student must faithfully attend one of our tutoring programs, maintain a passing grade point average and complete the required community service hours during the high school years at Crossroads.  Crossroads does not grant diplomas to students who leave the School after junior year.
 
As stated above, one of the advantages of Crossroads at the high school level is that you can customize your child’s courses to best suit post-high school plans. In order to receive a diploma from Crossroads Christian School, students in grades 9-12 must successfully complete a minimum of 20 credits in core academic courses. Upon verification, electives and sports can be applied as credits. Transferring students are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Incoming Students: All transferring students receiving a Crossroads diploma must complete a minimum of 10 credit hours from Crossroads and be enrolled full-time during the academic school year.

Incoming Seniors: Three consecutive years of academics (through junior year). Except for special circumstance, all seniors must be enrolled full time at Crossroads for the academic year in order to receive a diploma and complete a total of the required credits.

*Annual graduation ceremonies are at the end of the normal academic school year tentatively scheduled in May.

*Credit for students new to Crossroads is assessed on the basis of placement tests and transcripts. Interested students are encouraged to apply as early as possible to guarantee a spot and must meet the requirements for course study.

While home schoolers in Texas are not required to complete any specified course plan other than a bona fide visual study of reading, spelling, grammar, mathematics, and good citizenship, the Texas Education Agency’s Recommended High School Program consists of 26 credits. The Core Recommended Course Sample is:

  • 4 credits of English/Language Arts
  • 4 credits of Mathematics, including Algebra I, II, and Geometry
  • 4 credits of Science, including Biology, Chemistry, and Physics
  • 4 credits of Social Studies, including World History, World Geography, U.S. History, ½ credit Government, ½ credit Economics
  • 1 credit of Physical Education
  • ½ credit of Speech
  • 1 credit of Fine Arts
  • 5 ½ credits of Electives
  • 2 credits of Foreign Language Studies

Homeschool families have the option of choosing other tracks for coursework. However, these options are not available for every course. These tracks must be approved by both the CCS Homeschool Principal, and they cannot be changed mid-course. CCS tuition will remain the same regardless of which track is selected for each course, and families may incur additional charges when choosing the following options. Other accredited agencies may teach courses that do not emphasize the exact requirements necessary as required by the State of Texas and it is the parents’ responsibility to be aware of essential material that may not be covered.

Accountability by Victoria College

Parents may choose to dual enroll their student in certain courses offered by Victoria College. A list of approved courses is available in the CCS Office. If families choose to enroll in a Victoria College course, additional fees will incur. Students may take as many online courses as are approved, but they must also take at least three high school credits through the CCS program options and meet all of the other CCS High School requirements. Transfer credit will be awarded when CCS receives official notification from Victoria College that the requirements of the class have been met.

Accountability by Other Accredited Agency

The CCS High School Principal may approve a high school course completed through another accredited, Christian education institution, either on-campus or by distance learning. In any case, approval will be limited to courses having the same academic philosophy and rigor as the classes they replace. Transfer credit will be awarded when CCS receives official notification that the requirements of the class have been met. Students must receive approval for this option before beginning any work.

Independent Study

Homeschool students must meet all of the CCS requirements for an Independent Study.


STUDENT TESTING STANDARDS
Achievement Testing:
Our goal at Crossroads Christian School (CCS) is to provide a high-quality current assessment that includes helpful and technical resources at a minimal cost.  With this goal in mind, CCS researched testing companies and their products (tests and assessments that promote student achievement and learning with a full range of research-based standardized achievement tests, reports, and services), and then made the decision on a test that best fits these criteria. The achievement test we chose is not in any way related to the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness, commonly referred to as its acronym STAAR.
 

MAP TEST INFORMATION

MAP stands for Measures of Academic Progress which is produced by the non-profit North West Educational Association (NWEA). You can visit the NWEA website at www.nwea.org for more information. Standardized tests are a nationally normed test. The MAP tests are normed for accuracy and the adaptive nature of this test will help identify your child’s level of academic achievement.

Measures of Academic Progress® (MAP®) are K – 12 interim assessments that measure growth, project proficiency on high-stakes tests, and inform how educators differentiate instruction, evaluate programs, and structure curriculum.

Computer adaptive MAP assessments reveal precisely which academic skills and concepts the student has acquired and what they’re ready to learn. MAP assessments are grade independent and adapt to each student’s instructional level. Every item on a MAP assessment is anchored to a vertically aligned equal interval scale, called the RIT scale for Rasch UnIT—a stable measurement, like inches on a ruler, that covers all grades.

And because the measurement is reliable and accurate, RIT scores serve as an essential data point in a student’s learning plan; educators can see their precise learning level and respond accordingly.

Example: Say when your 3rd grader begins the test, the first question will be a typical third grade level question. If your child answers the question correctly, the next question will be slightly more difficult. As your child continues to answer questions correctly, the test gets progressively more difficult. When your child answers a question incorrectly, the next question is adjusted to be slightly more manageable. The MAP test is successful in identifying the actual academic level of the child as it adapts back and forth to find the level of the students’ academic comprehension, knowledge, and skills.

Testing Goal:
Each spring we will administer a Standardized Achievement Test which provides the school a method to monitor each student’s mastery of skills in order to create individualized education plans.
 
One of the major academic objectives at CCS is to enable students to work up to their ability. Generally speaking, there are three levels of education: “boredom” and “frustration” at the extremes, and “instructional”, which is the goal. The ideal educational environment is one where each student has the opportunity to learn at his or her “instructional” level.
 
We are confident that our students will be successful. However, we do not want to make the mistake of over-emphasizing test scores. They are just one part of a big picture. When considered together with other methods of assessment, they are very useful. Continuous evaluation of our teaching methods and curricula helps us to maintain, and even improve, the level of instruction that we offer the students of Crossroads Christian School.

Test scores are ready within 2 weeks.
 
Make-ups:
Test make-ups are not scheduled until regular testing has been completed and we determine the need for any. Parents are responsible for contacting the office if their student misses the test, and additional fees will be required ($ 30 for normal group testing, $ 80 for private tests).

We intend to pursue accreditation as soon as we are eligible to be considered by the appropriate accreditation-granting body. Our rigorous academic and professional standards are consistent with the expectations of accrediting organizations and we are on a path to accreditation.

As we strive to provide the best possible education for our students, we evaluate all aspects of the school on an ongoing basis. Current accountability measures include the following:

  • we are aware of accreditation standards and we have implemented or are in the processing of implementing those standards.
  • we are a member of Texas Home School Coalition and we confer with them in regards to curriculum, standards, and performance measures.
  • we are a member of the Home School Legal Defense Association and we benefit from their legal advice and support and all related conferences and events.
  • we are a member of the Christian Educators Association International and we have met and maintain the membership requirements for that organization.
  • we will administer standardized tests to our students each spring.
  • we partner with parents and help prepare students for the world and their chosen path of either college or career.

State Requirements

Texas State Law Requirements Regarding Home Schooling

To home school legally in Texas, you must follow three state law requirements:

  • The instruction must be bona fide (i.e., legitimate).
  • The curriculum must be in visual form (e.g., books, workbooks, video monitor).
  • The curriculum must include the five basic subjects of reading, spelling, grammar, mathematics, and good citizenship.

What is the required curriculum?

In order to be a legitimate home school in Texas, you must have a curriculum which teaches 5 subjects:

  • Reading
  • Spelling
  • Grammar
  • Mathematics
  • A study of good citizenship

In addition, the law states that you must pursue that curriculum in a bona fide (not a sham) manner. This curriculum may be obtained from any source and can consist of books, workbooks, other written materials, or materials on an electronic monitor, including computer or video screens, or any combination thereof. There are no other rules for home schooling in Texas.

What is a 'study of good citizenship'?

“Good citizenship” is usually taken to mean civics. Public schools teach one semester of civics, usually in the senior year of high school. Teaching U.S. and Texas history, government (theoretical and practical), the Pledge of Allegiance, and similar activities will also help meet this requirement. CCSI provides the curriculum to meet this requirement.

Must the school district approve my curriculum?

Absolutely not! Home schools in Texas are private schools, and private schools are not regulated by the state. The school district has no authority to approve curricula used by private schools.

May someone else home school my child?

Yes. Home schools in Texas are private schools. (See Leeper Case Decisions.) Private schools are not regulated by the state of Texas. There are no requirements, such as teacher certification or curriculum approval. The ruling of the Leeper case states that a parent “or one standing in parental authority” may educate a child.

How many hours a day must we conduct school?

Home schools in Texas are private schools and are not regulated by the state. No minimum hours are required. Consider the time spent in advisory, study hall, electives, PE, and passing periods.  You will probably find that your student can accomplish more work in a shorter period of time than a public school child if for no other reason than not having to stand in line, wait for roll call, and the like.

How many days per year must we have school?

The Texas Education Code requires that public schools meet 180 days per year; public school students must attend 170 days/year. This ruling applies to public schools only. Home schools in Texas are private schools, and the state of Texas does not regulate the number of days per year that private schools must be in session or the number of days a student must attend.

What about testing my child?

Although the state of Texas does not require testing of private school students, many parents give their children annual tests using nationally normed achievement tests.

What is required for graduation?

Home schools in Texas are private schools and are not regulated by the state. Therefore, home schools, just as other private schools, set their own graduation standards. There is no minimum age requirement for graduation.

How can my child receive a diploma?

When a student meets the requirements set by his school for graduation, he may receive a diploma.

Can my home educated students get into college?

Yes. Some colleges and universities are friendlier toward home schoolers than others, so some will be easier to work with. In Texas, state colleges are required to accept a home school graduate’s diploma and transcript and to treat a home school graduate just as they would any other applicant. Home school graduates are accepted at most colleges and universities around the nation, and are even recruited by many.

Is home schooling legal in Texas?

Yes, it is legal. Home schools in Texas are private schools, and, as such, students attending them are exempt from compulsory school attendance laws. The only requirements in the state of Texas are that you pursue in a bona fide manner a basic curriculum of reading, spelling, grammar, mathematics, and a study in good citizenship.

In addition to the state's more than 1,000 public school districts, Texas offers a variety of alternative schooling options for parents. These include charter schools, which are monitored and accredited under the statewide testing and accountability system; private schools, which may or may not be accredited through various organizations; and home schooling, which is not accredited or regulated by any state agency in Texas or commission. Families may also be interested in online learning programs and high school equivalency programs. For more information on each of these alternative schooling options, follow the links below:
Private Schools (outside source)
TEA does not have oversight of private schools in Texas; however, the agency works with the Texas Private School Accreditation Commission to ensure that students can easily transfer from non-public to public schools and that teacher service at non-public schools is recognized at public schools for salary purposes. Private schools may be accredited by a variety of organizations, but many private schools in Texas are not accredited by any organization.
Home Schooling
In 1995, the Texas Supreme Court affirmed the decision in the class action lawsuit Leeper v Arlington Independent School District that home schools can legally operate as private schools in Texas.

HOLIDAYS
CCSI will typically follow the VISD school calendar for holidays.  There will be some differences, please take note. For our academic calendar please click here.
 

Medication

For the convenience of our parents, we provide a medication waiver that must be signed and kept in the office.  It gives us permission to administer Tylenol, ibuprofen (Advil) and Tums, even throat lozenges. If parents prefer, we will call for permission each time medication may be warranted.

It is forbidden for students to carry medication of any sort in pockets or lunch boxes. All medication must go through the office and is kept in a safe place. If a student must carry an inhaler rather than keeping it in the school office, he needs to have permission from the office. All prescription medications must be in pharmacy bottles, clearly marked with name, medication, and instructions regarding the date and amount to be administered. Over-the- counter medications must be in original containers (no single pills in a baggie) with written instructions on a separate waiver signed by the parent and available in the office.

Information and Procedures

1. No medication will be administered in school or during school-sponsored activities without the parent’s/guardian’s written authorization and a written physician order. This includes both prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications.

2. The parent/guardian is responsible for completing the CCS Medication Waiver. This is required every school year for each new or continuing order or if there is a change in dosage or time of administration during the school year. (A physician may use office stationery or prescription pad in lieu of completing Part II.) Information necessary includes: child’s name, diagnosis, medication name, dosage, time of administration, duration of medication, side effects, physician signature, and date.

3. The medication must be delivered to the school by the parent/guardian or, under special circumstances, an adult designated by the parent/guardian. Under no circumstances will the School administer medication brought to school by a child.

4. All prescription medication must be provided in a container with the pharmacist’s label attached. Non-prescription OTC medication must be in the container with the manufacturer’s original label. Physician samples must be appropriately labeled by the physician.

5. The first day’s dosage of any new medication must have been given at home before it can be administered at school.

6. The parent/guardian is responsible for collecting any unused portion of a medication within one week after expiration of the physician’s order or at the end of the school year. Medication not claimed within that time period will be destroyed.

7. Self-administered and/or non-medically prescribed medications are entirely the responsibility of the parent/guardian and not that of Crossroads Christian School.

8. Students may not self-administer controlled substances.

9. A physician’s order and parental permission are necessary for self-carry/self-administered emergency medications such as inhalers for asthma and EpiPens® for anaphylaxis. The school must evaluate and approve the student’s ability and capability to self-administer medication. It is imperative the student understands the necessity for reporting to teacher or other school staff that they have self-administered their inhaler without any improvement or have self- administered an EpiPen®, so that 911 may be called.

10. The school staff will call the prescriber if a question arises about the child and/or the child’s medication.

11. This form is effective for the current school year.

SCHOOL DRESS CODE

Dress Code
Crossroads acknowledges the student’s desire to dress “in style”; however, what is fashionable to wear may not be appropriate for school or school-sponsored events. Christian appropriateness must be maintained at all times in both dress and manner.  There is much variance between Christians on the issue of proper attire. Crossroads does not require uniforms. We do ask that modesty, good grooming, and common sense guide a student’s choice of dress. Teachers and administrators are often required to make judgment calls on these issues. We believe that appropriate clothing encourages responsible behavior, therefore we ask for a gracious attitude on the part of both student and parent.
 
Our grooming standards for both boys and girls are designed to minimize the unattractive spirit of clothes' competition which seeks to draw attention to self or sex.  Please check with the school office first when in doubt concerning clothing. If a student comes to school in clothing deemed inappropriate, the school will call to have the proper clothing brought to school or the student will be sent home to change. Absences or tardies from school caused by failure to comply with dress code standards will be considered unexcused. Repeated offenses will be dealt with as a serious disciplinary matter and will ultimately result in the student's expulsion. The dress code applies to all school activities unless specifically modified by the administration. Parents are asked to observe our dress code when in the building. The principal may change this code at any time to adjust to appropriate/inappropriate fashion fads.
Please read the following carefully:
  1. Shorts must be no shorter than 2" above the top of the kneecap. No biker/spandex shorts (leggings or skintight pants) of any length can be worn unless covered to within 2" of the top of the kneecap.
  2. Sleeveless shirts/blouses must have "normal" armholes (not cut in or cut low) or another shirt should be worn underneath. Straps must be 2” or wider and must cover all undergarments.
  3. No spaghetti strap or strapless garments. No see-through fabrics. No under garments showing.
  4. Bare midriff (crop) tops must have another shirt underneath. If a student raises both arms in the air and skin shows then the outfit requires a shirt underneath. No midriffs shall be showing.
  5. Skirts and dresses must be no shorter than 2" above the top of the kneecap or longer while standing upright.
  6. No torn, cut, fringed or frayed jeans (above the knees), shorts, or shirts can be worn. Cut-offs must be dress code length. Students may not wear clothing that has been written or drawn on (more than 20% of the clothing item).
  7. Clothing must fit properly, modestly and neatly. No low-waist or low-rise pants. Pants must fit so they do not sag, exposing one’s undergarments (including tops of boxers.) No item of clothing shall expose undergarments while bending over.
  8. No clothing, jewelry, symbols or accessories that are pagan, anti-Christian, or inappropriate to a Christian school are allowed. This includes all non-Christian musicians and any sort of satanic symbol.
  9. All gang or secret society clothing and/or symbols are prohibited.
  10. No makeup prior to grade 7--light makeup is allowed for grade 7 and up.
  11. Guidelines may be adjusted for field trips. Certain association events will require us to ask boys to wear dress slacks, shirts and occasionally a tie. Girls may be asked to wear dressy skirts and blouses or dresses.
  12. Shoes must be worn at all times. Flip-flop type shoes and sandals without a back strap are not allowed. (State Health Regulation.)
  13. Hats will not be worn during morning assembly.
  14. Proper undergarments need to be worn at all times by male and female students, and should not be visible.
  15. Male students: high school and middle school boys must limit earrings to single small studs, no loops or gauges. Boys in elementary school must not wear earrings. may not wear earrings. Females are not allowed to wear multiple earrings. No body or tongue piercing is allowed.
  • Clothing that endorses, promotes or glorifies drugs, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, anti-Christian messages, or music groups with anti-Christian lyrics, sexual innuendoes, anarchy, skulls, references to death or suicide, or other disrespect to God or the nation is not allowed. Furthermore, graphics or pictures, emblems, or writings that are lewd, offensive, vulgar, or obscene or graphics related to gangs, illegal activities or substances, glorifying blood, gore, skulls, etc. are not allowed.
  • Visible body piercing or tattoos (permanent or not) that are lewd or gang-related, or that pose a disruption or safety concern at school are not allowed and must be covered. Those entering Crossroads Christian School who have body piercing(s) other than earrings, must remove the hardware from the piercing while on campus or at any school-sponsored activity. Students should refrain from body piercing and tattooing, with the exception of pierced ears. Students making tattoo(s) (referenced above) visible during school or at school-sponsored functions risk disciplinary action.
Consequences for Inappropriate Dress:
Any student out of dress code is considered in violation of school policy and will be sent home.

Crossroads Christian School Agreement

I have read and agree with the beliefs and mission statement of Crossroads Christian School Incorporated. I understand that the curriculum provided is a homeschool educational program. I understand that my child will attend tutoring a minimum of two days per week and that ultimately, the burden of my child’s education lies with me. I agree to partner with CCSI and its affiliations to help facilitate and implement home-based educational support necessary for effective learning. CCSI and any affiliations operate and are educating under the delegated authority of the parents.

I do hereby confirm that Crossroads Christian School Incorporated and is not affiliated in any way First English Evangelical Lutheran Church.  I voluntarily sign this Release of Liability, Assumption of Risk, and Agreement to Indemnify and agree to hold harmless and not to sue Crossroads Christian School Incorporated or First English Evangelical Lutheran Church and any administrators, staff, agents or employees of said organizations.

CODE OF CONDUCT STUDENT AGREEMENT

The behavior expected in this type of educational program should ultimately reflect excellence in character and integrity. Students are expected to fully participate, follow all guidelines and conduct themselves in such manners that properly facilitate an atmosphere conducive to a high-quality learning experience for all. Students, this means that you do your part and share in maintaining the level of excellence expected. You are in partnership with educators and peers and responsible for our environment. In order to maintain the level of excellence that is expected, you will be sent home for repeated behavior that violates the mission here at Crossroads Christian School and its affiliations. We understand that people make mistakes and we truly believe that Jesus is in the business of forgiveness and restoration. We want Crossroads to be a place where students can benefit from their mistakes. We also understand that profound or repetitious ungodliness undermines the school community. Crossroad's Code of Expected Behavior is very simple:

At all times, be humble in speech and kind in action. Contribute to the building up and encouragement of one another.  Choose to promptly follow requests and requirements without complaint. Use classroom time wisely. These simple statements have far-reaching implications.  As stated under the Policies and Procedures section, attendance at Crossroads is a privilege and not a right. Any student who does not conform to the standards and regulations of the institution may forfeit this privilege. The school maintains the right to admit only those students who are in harmony with the standards of the school. The school may expel any student at any time, regardless of whether or not the student conforms to the specific rules and regulations of the school. Each year students are evaluated before enrollment is allowed.  Continuation in the school is based upon these evaluations.

A violation — whether occurring at school or during school-sponsored events, activities, or functions, whether on campus or off campus— for inappropriate behavior can involve any of the following : teasing or bullying anyone, or using offensive gestures or actions; speaking with disrespect, mockery, swearing, unkindness, or vulgar language. E-cigarettes and vaporizer pens are considered smoking-related products and are prohibited on campus.We have a strict non-smoking policy. Use of tobacco or smoking-related products is prohibited within all buildings, facilities, vehicles, and spaces (including walkways, parking, parking lots, common areas and campus greens) that are owned, rented, leased, or otherwise controlled by CCS or FELC (First English Lutheran Church). Substance abuse, sexual immorality, theft, violence, cheating, racism, terroristic threats, occult practices and other unchristian behaviors will not be ignored. Disciplinary action will vary based on the degree of the offense and determined by the CCSI staff. Furthermore, *weapons of any kind, anyone involved with theft, vandalism, the use of illegal drugs and alcohol, leaving the premises and other such offenses will immediately be sent home or turned over to the proper authorities. You will be billed and are responsible for repair costs and damages to any property.

This contract will be used to assist in determining their future at Crossroads Christian School and its affiliations.

Students are expected to honor the Codes of Conduct previously stated and sign to  acknowledging agreement and statement:   I have read and agree to abide by the code of conduct included in this application.

A “weapon” means any object, device or instrument designed as a weapon or through its use is capable of threatening or producing bodily harm or which may be used to inflict self-injury including, but not limited to, any firearm, whether loaded or unloaded; air guns; pellet guns; BB guns; all knives; blades; clubs; metal knuckles; nunchucks; throwing stars; explosives; fireworks; mace and other propellants; stun guns; ammunition; poisons; chains; arrows; and objects that have been modified to serve as a weapon.

Students and parents are expected to honor the Codes of Conduct previously stated and sign acknowledging agreement


The No Nit/Lice Policy

A Healthy Standard for Children and their Families

The National Pediculosis Association, recommends the No Nit Policy as the public health standard intended to keep children lice free, nit free, and in school.

Pediculosis represents one of the most common communicable infestations and whether or not we understand how this has evolved, it is important to acknowledge head lice as a problem when raising or caring for children.

Medical and Social Advantages of the No Nit Policy

  • Prevents continuing infestations caused by the surviving and hatching of nits.
  • Maximizes the opportunity to eliminate repeated chemical treatments aimed at killing head lice that hatch from remaining viable nits.
  • Eliminates confusion -- Were these eggs here before or do they represent a new infestation?
  • Contributes to improved standards of personal hygiene and self-esteem, protecting children from ridicule and rejection.
  • Enhances uninterrupted class time for the majority of the children and prevents lost days at work that can be costly for parents.

The Spirit of the No Nit Policy is to minimize head lice infestations as a public health problem and to keep children in school lice and nit free.

How Do You Get Rid of Head Lice?
The Texas Department of State Health Services recommends the following treatment for head lice and their eggs:

  1. Use an over-the-counter FDA-approved shampoo treatment that you find at the drug or grocery store. Follow the directions on the packaging exactly.
  2. Remove as many eggs as possible with a special comb that comes with the head lice treatment.
  3. Treat your home at the same time you treat your child. Do the following:
    • Soak combs and brushes for 5-10 minutes in some of the lice shampoo for 1 hour or in very, very hot water.
    • Wash sheets, blankets and other bedding in the hottest setting of water in the washing machine.  Dry in a hot dryer.
    • Dry-clean non-washable items or seal these items in a plastic bag for 1 week or tumble them in a very hot dryer. 
    • Vacuum furniture, carpets and mattresses thoroughly.
  4. Treat hair a second time 7 to 10 days after the first treatment (or follow the instructions of the manufacturer of the lice treatment) to make sure that you kill any lice that may have hatched from eggs that might have been missed during the combing.
  5. There is no need to cut hair. Lice like to crawl on short hair just as much as long hair and they need the same treatment.

THE LAW AND POLICIES ADDRESSING HEAD LICE:

Laws, Rules, and Policies

There is no statute in Texas that addresses excluding children with head lice from school. DSHS does not have authority to impose a set policy regarding head lice on districts.  http://www.dshs.state.tx.us. There is no law that addresses head lice; the school or district can create their own guidelines by developing written policies that:

    Facilitate efficient and consistent implementation by all campuses

    Protect school nurses, teachers and other school staff

    Create peace of mind for administrators and parents

    Ensure all children are treated in a fair and equitable manner.
